My Story

Hello all!

Welcome to my lil’ blog. My name is Elaine Decker but everyone calls me Lainey. I am currently a junior at Roanoke College, however I will be abroad this fall of 2017. I am based in San Sebastián, Spain but intend to travel all over Europe in my time here. My goal of this blog is simply to share my experiences with my friends, family, and anyone else interested. I will also be using this site as a method of self reflection as I go through my semester, and I will be making both Spanish and English posts (hopefully).

So… what is this ‘great perhaps’?

One of my favorite books of all time is Looking for Alaska by John Green. The main character Miles basically decides he is sick of his normal routine he has grown up with and decides to go off to boarding school in the middle of no where. He finds adventure, amazing people, and self discovery all along the way. Within the first few pages, the reader finds Miles’ intentions draw from a quote by a dead poet, Francois Rabelais. Miles declares to his parents, “his last words were “I go to seek a Great Perhaps.” That’s why I’m going. So I don’t have to wait until I die to start seeking a Great Perhaps.” So I guess you could say that’s why I am studying abroad. I am going to seek a great perhaps– beyond Salem, Virginia, beyond Gates Mills, Ohio, beyond the reaches of America. I’m not quite sure what I’m looking for but I’m sure I’ll find something.
